Study on cutting performance of SiCp/Al composite using textured YG8 carbide tool

Abstract Precision machining of SiCp/Al composites is a challenge due to the existence reinforcement phase in this material. This work focuses on study textured tools’ cutting performance composite, as well comparison with non-textured tools. The results show that micro-pit tool can reduce force by 5–13% and length 9–39%. Compared tools, stability tools better. It found surface roughness smallest (0.4 ?m) when texture spacing 100 ?m, residual stress be minimized around 15 MPa case 80 ?m. In addition, SiC particles size 2–12 ?m composite may play supporting role between chips, which three-body friction, thereby reducing wear, sticking, secondary phenomenon. At same time, some enter into texture, so number reduced friction then decreases, improves roughness, reduces stress.
